Our distillation

From resinous wood to pure Oud oil

Resinous agarwood (Oud chips) is distilled through a steam distillation process to extract pure agarwood oil.

The raw material

How agarwood forms

Oud oil is derived from the resinous wood of agarwood trees. Indian agarwood oil is obtained from infected Indian agarwood trees (Aquilaria malaccensis), whose heartwood develops a dark, fragrant resin.

The favourable climate and traditional knowledge of North East India allow agarwood trees to develop this distinctive resin. The part used for distillation is the resinous wood itself — agarwood chips.

The process

How Oud oil is extracted

Oud oil is extracted by steam distillation or hydro-distillation.

  1. Pieces of resinous agarwood on a dark wooden surface

    Selecting resinous agarwood

Fragrant resinous wood chips are extracted from agarwood trees through a meticulous process. The older the tree, the better the resinous chips it yields — and the quality of the wood determines the quality of the final Oud oil.

  2. Macro view of amber resin filling the cells of pale wood

    Preparing the wood

The resinous wood is prepared for distillation, so that steam can pass through the powdered wood.

  3. Glass distillation apparatus with agarwood pieces in the flask

    Steam or hydro-distillation

Controlled, heated steam is passed through the powdered wood. The steam carries the oil locked inside the cellular structure of the wood.

  4. Golden oil flowing from a glass condenser

    Collecting the Oud oil

Once the steam has cooled, the Oud oil is collected — pure agarwood oil, ranging in colour from yellow to golden orange and dark brown.

At a glance

Water and steam distillation

Our Oud oil is distilled from resinous agarwood chips sourced from North East India, primarily Tripura, where skilled artisans extract the fragrant resinous wood through a meticulous process.

The result is a rare, pure and natural essential oil with a deep, earthy aroma intertwined with warm, woody notes.

Rose Oud oil

Co-distillation of rose and Oud

For Rose Oud oil, resinous Oud wood chips and rose flowers undergo steam distillation together. This co-distillation yields a highly concentrated, aromatic Rose Oud oil — a harmonious union of rose and Oud.
